CAHILL BACKS OSIECK

by isport

Former Everton midfielder Tim Cahill has praised the Australian national team manager, Holger Osieck, by saying that he has been extremely influential in helping the team rejuvenate. Australia have been one of the successful Asian teams in the world stage, but they have been suffering in recent seasons due to the ageing of the squad.

Several players like Cahill are approaching the end of their stellar careers, which meant that Holger Osieck had the task of introducing new blood into the team to the fresh it. So far, he has done an extremely good job with it according to Cahill, who is currently playing for the MLS team New York Red Bulls.

The golden era of the Australian players has well and truly come to an end according to Cahill and this is the time to focus on the new generation. Australia are expected to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and Cahill expects a good performance from the new generation in their first major tournament. Australia's recent 2-2 draw with Oman in a World Cup qualifying match has hurt the team in terms of competing against the likes of Jordan in the group stages. Australia are currently third in the World Cup qualifying group behind Japan and Jordan.

“I think it is fantastic. What Holger is trying to do is incorporate new players over a period over time. You have to slowly put the ingredients together and make sure that you don’t push things too quickly. We are at a stage now where the ability and stature of the boys is fantastic. It is great to be one of the older players that guides and leads. It is a different aspect but one that is really enjoyable. To see these kids help the team and push us for spots I couldn’t be happier,” said Cahill.
